6 Ways Your Phone Is Tracking You – And How to Stop It
Have you ever casually mentioned a product or service near your phone, only to find ads for it popping up on your social media feeds moments later? That unsettling coincidence is no accident – your phone is listening. But what’s even more concerning? It’s tracking you too.
From built-in GPS to apps and even your browsing activity, your phone collects and shares more data about you than you might realize. But don’t worry – you can take control. At The Compulab, we understand how important privacy is for individuals and businesses alike. In this guide, we’ll reveal the top six ways your phone is tracking you and, most importantly, how to stop it.
Why Phone Tracking Is Risky
While some tracking helps deliver convenience, like better navigation or tailored ads, it also opens the door to serious risks. Your data is a hot commodity for internet marketers, collecting data to target you with local and interest-based ads. This digital “stalking” is legal as long as you have the option to opt in or out.
But not only marketers are interested in your data. Cybercriminals are too.
These are the reasons why you should keep an eye on what your phone is tracking:
-
Privacy Invasion
Apps and third parties like websites can track your habits, behaviors, and even location without your full awareness. This data can be sold or used for aggressive advertising – or worse, malicious activities.
-
Identity Theft And Fraud
Cybercriminals can use your tracking data to uncover personal details and routines or patterns, leading to fraud, unauthorized account access, or financial loss; or even, emotional harm.
-
Physical Security Threats
Real-time tracking can expose your location to bad actors, making you more vulnerable to stalking or theft. Publicizing your movements can also make it easier for bad actors to predict your routines or target you when you’re most vulnerable.
6 Ways Your Phone Is Tracking You – And How to Shut It Down
1. Location Services
Your phone tracks your movements through GPS, recording where you go and how long you stay. While convenient for directions or nearby recommendations, it also creates a map of your routines.
Turn it off:
- iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Toggle off Location Services or adjust permissions for each app. Disable “Significant Locations” and clear your history.
- Android: Go to Settings > Location > App Permissions. Turn off “Use Location” or disable tracking for specific apps. Clear your location history for added privacy tapping “Delete Location History” at the bottom of the screen under “Location History”.
2. App Permissions
Many apps request access to your camera, microphone, and contacts – even when they don’t need it. This enables constant tracking and data collection.
Turn it off:
- iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security. Review categories like Camera and Microphone to adjust permissions.
- Android: Go to Settings > Apps > Permissions and manage access for sensitive data like photos or contacts.
3. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Connections
Your phone scans for networks and devices, revealing your location to third parties without your knowledge.
Turn it off:
- iPhone: Swipe down from the top-right corner and toggle off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. For deeper control, go to Settings > Wi-Fi & Bluetooth and disable scanning.
- Android: Go to Settings > Location > Wi-Fi & Bluetooth scanning, and disable these options.
4. Browsing Activity
Websites and apps monitor your search history to create a profile of your interests for targeted advertising and potentially selling your behavior patterns to third parties.
Turn it off:
- Use private browsing or incognito mode.
- In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy & Security and disable “Web & App Activity.” Clear your history and cookies regularly.
5. Ad Tracking
Your phone uses an advertising ID to follow your behavior across apps and websites. This ID follows your activity, providing advertisers with insight into your interests to serve personalized ads.
Turn it off:
- iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and toggle off “Allow Apps to Request to Track.” You can also go to Apple Advertising to disable personalized ads. *This does not mean you won’t still see ads; you just won’t see personalized ads.
- Android: Go to Settings > Privacy > Ads and opt out of personalized ads.
6. Social Media and Search Engines
Platforms like Google, Facebook and Instagram track your online behavior and interactions to recommend content and serve ads.
Turn it off:
Review and adjust privacy settings in your accounts, like Facebook’s “Privacy Shortcuts” or Google’s “Data & Privacy” settings.
- Social Media: Go to each platform’s settings (e.g., Facebook > Settings & Privacy > Privacy Shortcuts) to review what data is being collected and manage ad preferences.
- Google: Go to Google Account > Data & Privacy > Web & App Activity to control how Google tracks your search and activity history. You can also adjust Ad Settings to limit ad tracking.
By adjusting these settings, you can significantly reduce the amount of personal information your phone tracks, giving you more control over your privacy.

For business owners, phone tracking isn’t just a personal concern – it’s a business risk. Cybercriminals and even competitors can exploit these vulnerabilities to gather valuable data and gain insights into your operations, client interactions, or confidential communications.
